    Getting to Kilimanjaro

    Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

The closest airport, located between Moshi and Arusha. Direct flights from Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar), Istanbul (Turkish), and Nairobi (multiple carriers).

Transfer time: ~45 min to Moshi, ~30 min to Arusha.

Most operators include airport transfers in their package.

Dar es Salaam (DAR) + Domestic

More international flight options. Connect to JRO via a short domestic flight (~1 hour) with Precision Air or Fastjet.

Alternative: Fly into Nairobi (NBO) and take a shuttle bus to Moshi (~5 hours, ~$30).

    Visa, Currency & Cash

    Visa Requirements

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Tanzania. The easiest option is the e-Visa, applied for online before you travel.

    • Single-entry tourist visa: $50 USD
    • Apply at visa.immigration.go.tz
    • Processing takes 3–10 business days
    • Passport must be valid for 6+ months
    • You'll also need a yellow fever certificate if travelling from an endemic country
    Currency & Cash

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US Dollars are widely accepted for tourism services.

    • Bring USD cash for tips — small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20)
    • Bills must be dated 2006 or later to be accepted
    • ATMs available in Moshi and Arusha (Visa/Mastercard)
    • Credit cards accepted at hotels but not on the mountain
    • Budget ~$200–$350 in cash for tips, plus spending money
